Baltimore 1962 and America is in the grip of Cold War paranoia. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works as a cleaner, lonely, mute Elisa lives a mundane life. Her only friends are an older gay male neighbour Giles and her co-worker Zelda. But everything will change when Elisa stumbles across a classified experiment in one of the labs. The authorities want to use this unusual creature shipped in from Latin America in the war against the USSR but Elisa sees a lonely being in need of friendship and love.



Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Guillermo Del Toro started his career working as a special effects makeup artist and first gained recognition for his 1993 feature film debut Cronos, a supernatural horror film which he also wrote. He quickly stepped into the international spotlight with films like Mimic (1997), The Devil’s Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015). The Shape Of Water is his ninth feature film. He won Oscar and BAFTA nominations for the Pan’s Labyrinth screenplay, he won the BAFTA for best foreign language film for Pan’s Labyrinth and the Golden Lion for best film of Venice for The Shape Of Water in September this year.
