This classic film from 1987 is the story of the life of Pu-Yi, the last emperor of China. After being captured by the Red Army as a war criminal in 1950, Pu-Yi recalls his childhood from prison. He remembers his lavish youth in the Forbidden City, where he was afforded every luxury but unfortunately sheltered from the outside world and the complex political situation surrounding him. As revolution sweeps through China, the world Pu-Yi knew is dramatically upended.

Bernardo Bertolucci

Bernardo Bertolucci started his career as an assistant to Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1958 and directed his first film La Commare Secca in 1962 at the age of just 22. His second film Before The Revolution (1964) played in Critics Week at Cannes and his 1970 masterpiece The Conformist was in competition at Berlin and earned Bertolucci an Oscar nomination for his adapted screenplay. He achieved global fame – and notoriety – with his erotic drama Last Tango In Paris (1972) and then delivered a string of critically acclaimed movies – 1900 (1976), La Luna (1979), Tragedy Of A Ridiculous Man (1981) – before his 1987 Chinese epic The Last Emperor won a dazzling nine Oscars. Since then, he has made films including The Sheltering Sky (1990), Little Buddha (1993), Stealing Beauty (1996) and The Dreamers (2003).
