1915 France. The Paridier farm. A mother and her daughter take over when their men leave for the front to fight in the war. They work tirelessly, their lives marked by hard work and their men’s rare visits on leave. Hortense, the oldest, hires a young ward of the state to help called Francine. Francine is a hard-worker and the women welcome her into the fold; she in turn believes that she has finally found a family. But when the men return, passions are stirred that will disrupt the status quo.
