Setsuko’s miserable Tokyo life takes a turn for the better when she is convinced by her niece Mika to enroll in an unorthodox English class that requires her to wear a blonde wig and take on an American persona named ‘Lucy.’ The new identity awakens something dormant in Setsuko, and she quickly falls for her American instructor, a handsome surfer dude called John. But, when John suddenly disappears from class and Setsuko learns that he has eloped to California with Mika, she and Mika’s mother, her estranged sister Ayako (Kaho Minami), fly off to the US in search of the runaway couple.
